ENERGY (ELECTRIC AND NATURAL GAS) MONITORING SYSTEM THROUGH INTERNET

The main objective is energy saving through the study and analysis of consumption profiles.

For that it is necessary design a scheme for continuous monitoring of energy consumption (natural Gas and electricity). This information is sent through Internet to the Consumption Control and Management Centre. The Centre is provided with software for the study and analysis of collected data. By mean of the analysis, saving points will be pointed out and energy efficiency measures will be addressed to detected improvement points. The aim is energy saving knowing all aspects related to consumption.

For data collection are needed the following devices:

  • Natural Gas meter (1)
  • Pulse transmitter (1)
  • Galvanic isolator (2)
  • ENERinTOWN Electricity meter (3)
  • Power Supply company Electricity meter(4)

For data transmission through Internet two options are proposed. These two options depend on the availability of LAN connection in the building analysed:

OPTION 1
  • LAN (5)
  • Consumption Control and Management Centre (6)

Energy Monitoring System

OPTION 2
  • MODEM (5)
  • Consumption Control and Management Centre (6)

Energy Monitoring System

SYSTEM

1.- Pulse generator installed in natural gas meter (1) sends its pulse through a wire into the electric meter. This allows the system to make a relation between the number of pulses received and the units of natural gas consumed. This electric pulse is sent from pulse transmitter to electric meter through a "firewall", which is the galvanic isolator (2).

2.- This isolator gives an extra security environment to the gas meter, it "isolates" gas circuit from the electricity circuit (by mean of three galvanic isolation), thereby protecting the gas area from possible voltage surges from the electricity meter (3). In summary, galvanic isolator receives the pulse, which is transmitted to the logger in the electricity meter (3).

3.- Electric meter (3) can store all natural gas pulse-data creating a file which can be exported or downloaded into internet.

4.- The data gathered by the electricity meter (3) is transmitted via modem or LAN (5) over the Internet to the Consumption Control and Management Centre (6), when it is required by the data capture software installed in the EVE server.

5.- Data from electric meter containing; electricity consumption and natural gas pulses are sent to the Consumption Control and Management Centre (6). In the centre these data are transformed and uploaded into specific Software. This Software (resident in the Centre's Server) is used for data analysis and fro the creation of diagrams and consumption profiles. This diagram allows detecting malfunction in energy consumption procedures or behavioural energy wasting. Soft energy saving measures will be implemented and results will be tested using above-mentioned Software. In this sense, the scheme makes possible to implements energy saving measures and evaluate almost in real time results given by measures implemented.

In the project, the electricity meter (3) is installed in series with the meter of the power supply company (4). This means that the metering for the ENERinTOWN project (electricity and gas) is separate to the metering for invoicing purposes. This was one of the company's prerequisites for allowing the installation.
